It is a rack mounted preamp as well as a guitar amp head?
I wonder if I bought a rackmount preamp. Would it work the same as a head amp. As I plug the guitar in which I myself would be a regular amp head and have it be a 4×12 cabinet?
No – you can not connect the speakers to a preamplifier. A preamplifier amplifies only the guitar signal to "line level" which is a similar level what comes out of a CD player. A head amplifier actually has a preamplifier and a power amplifier. The power amplifier amplifies the signal to the "speaker level, which is high enough to drive the speakers. You can obtain the prior if you feel you need. The preamp output then connect to the entry head. The simplest setup would just get a head.
